Ukrainian and Russian both use Cyrillic. If you already know one, the other looks familiar on a page. That familiarity helps, and it also creates traps: some letters look identical and do not sound the same.
This is a learner note about letters and sounds. It is not a politics essay. The goal is fewer pronunciation mistakes when you read.
Shared script, different sound map
Ukrainian has 33 letters. Pronunciation is generally consistent: what you see is close to what you say, with little of the vowel reduction that shapes Russian speech.
Russian also has 33 letters, including signs and sounds Ukrainian does not use the same way (for example ы, э, ё, and the hard sign ъ).
If you are starting Ukrainian cold, treat the full alphabet as its own system: Ukrainian Cyrillic Alphabet. If you already read Russian, use that guide plus the “false friends” below.
Ukrainian letters to learn early
These are the ones that most often surprise people coming from Russian:
| Letter | Plain sound | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Ґ | hard g as in go | Ukrainian Г is not this sound |
| Г | breathy h-like sound | Looks like Russian Г, but Ukrainian Г is not hard g |
| І | ee as in see | Ukrainian’s clear “ee” letter |
| Ї | yee | Unique glide + ee; common in everyday words like їжа (food) |
| Є | ye as in yes | Has a y glide; Ukrainian has no Э |
Biggest single trap: Ukrainian Г looking like Russian Г. In Ukrainian, default Г is the breathy sound. Hard g is Ґ. If you keep saying Russian g for every Г, you will sound Russian while reading Ukrainian letters.
Image cue: pick one vivid photo per letter you keep mixing up (Г vs Ґ, І vs И, Ї). You are training the sound, not copying a chart into English.
Letter lookalikes that shift meaning
A short contrast list (Ukrainian versus what learners mix with Russian):
- Ukrainian И is closer to a short ih (as in bit). Russian И is the long ee. Ukrainian uses І for that ee.
- Ukrainian Ї always carries a y glide before ee. Do not treat it like a plain Russian Й.
- Ukrainian Є includes a y glide. Russian Э does not exist in Ukrainian spelling.
You do not need to memorize every IPA symbol today. You need to stop auto-applying Russian sounds to Ukrainian shapes.

A five-card practice (one soft next step)
Make five cards that force the trap letters:
- Г with a Ukrainian word you care about (голова, гарний)
- Ґ (ґанок or another word you will actually use)
- І vs И pair
- Ї (їжа, їхати)
- Є (Європа or a name you need)
Use images you chose. Review when due. That is alphabet vocab practice, not a fluency promise and not a full language course.
