🇺🇦 Ukrainian Cyrillic Alphabet
All 33 letters, unique sounds, and key differences from Russian
The Ukrainian Alphabet
Ukrainian uses the Cyrillic script with 33 letters. While many letters look and sound similar to Russian, Ukrainian has several unique letters (Ґ, Є, І, Ї) and some familiar-looking letters that represent different sounds. Ukrainian pronunciation is very consistent — what you see is what you say, with almost no vowel reduction.

Unique Ukrainian Sounds
Ukrainian has several letters and sounds that set it apart from Russian and other Slavic languages: **Ґ (hard g):** This is the true "g" as in "go." It is distinct from Г, which in Ukrainian is a breathy, voiced "h" sound (/ɦ/). Russian uses Г for a hard "g," but Ukrainian Г sounds completely different. The letter Ґ is rare and appears in a small set of native Ukrainian words (ґанок, ґрати, ґудзик). **Є (ye):** Pronounced /jɛ/, like "ye" in "yes." This letter does not exist in Russian. It replaces what Russian spells with Э in some contexts. **Ї (yi):** Pronounced /ji/, like "yee" in "yield." Always has a "y" glide before the "ee" sound. Unique to Ukrainian — not found in Russian. **І (ee):** Pronounced /i/, like "ee" in "see." Ukrainian uses І for the "ee" sound where Russian uses И. Ukrainian И instead sounds like the short "i" in "bit" (/ɪ/).
| Ukrainian Letter | Sound | What It Replaces in Russian | Key Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ґ | /ɡ/ — hard "g" | Russian Г = /ɡ/ | Ukrainian Г is /ɦ/ (breathy h), so Ґ fills the hard "g" gap |
| Є | /jɛ/ — "ye" | Russian Э = /ɛ/ | Є adds a "y" glide; Ukrainian has no Э letter |
| Ї | /ji/ — "yee" | No direct Russian equivalent | Always "yi" — used in words like їжа (food), їхати (to go) |
| І | /i/ — "ee" | Russian И = /i/ | Ukrainian И = /ɪ/ (short "i"), so І is the "ee" sound |
Letter Combinations
Ukrainian letter combinations often involve palatalization (softening consonants with ь) and a few unique digraphs. The soft sign (ь) does not have a sound of its own — it changes how the preceding consonant is pronounced, making it "softer" by raising the middle of the tongue toward the palate.
| Combination | IPA | Sounds Like... | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| дж | dʒ | Like "j" in "judge" | джерело (source / spring) |
| дз | dz | Like "ds" in "beds" | дзвін (bell) |
| нь | nʲ | Soft "n" — like "ny" in "canyon" | день (day) |
| ль | lʲ | Soft "l" — like "li" in "million" | сіль (salt) |
| ть | tʲ | Soft "t" — tongue touches upper teeth with middle raised | мати (mother / to have) |
| сь | sʲ | Soft "s" — a lighter, more hissing "s" | осінь (autumn) |
| ться | tsʲɑ | Pronounced "tsia" — common verb ending | вчиться (studies) |
| ьо | ʲɔ | Soft consonant + "o" | сьогодні (today) |
| ьк | ʲk | Soft consonant before "k" | маленький (small) |
| ий | ɪj | Like "iy" — very common adjective ending | красивий (beautiful) |
Key Differences from Russian
If you already know Russian, Ukrainian will feel familiar — but several letters that look the same represent different sounds. These "false friends" are the most common source of mistakes. The table below highlights the critical differences.
| Ukrainian | Russian | Difference |
|---|---|---|
| І /i/ — "ee" in "see" | И /i/ — "ee" in "see" | Same sound, different letter. Ukrainian uses І for the "ee" sound that Russian writes as И. |
| И /ɪ/ — "i" in "bit" | Ы /ɨ/ — "i" in "roses" | Ukrainian И is a short, relaxed "ih" sound. Russian has no exact match (Ы is further back). Ukrainian has no Ы. |
| Ї /ji/ — "yee" in "yield" | Й /j/ — "y" in "yes" | Ї is unique to Ukrainian: it is always "yi" (two sounds). Russian Й is a single consonant glide. |
| Ґ /ɡ/ — hard "g" in "go" | Г /ɡ/ — hard "g" in "go" | Ukrainian Г = breathy /ɦ/. To get the hard "g" sound, Ukrainian uses the separate letter Ґ. |
| Є /jɛ/ — "ye" in "yes" | Э /ɛ/ — "e" in "bet" | Є includes a "y" glide. Ukrainian has no Э letter. Russian has no Є letter. |
| Ь (soft sign) — palatalizes consonants | Ь (soft sign) — palatalizes consonants | Same function in both languages, but Ukrainian uses it more extensively, especially in verb endings (ться). |
