How Ukrainian Adjectives Work
In Ukrainian, adjectives must agree with the noun they describe in three ways: gender (masculine, feminine, neuter), number (singular, plural), and case (all 7 cases). This means a single adjective like "new" can have dozens of different forms. There are two main types of adjective stems: hard-stem (the vast majority) and soft-stem.
Hard-Stem Adjective Endings
Most Ukrainian adjectives are hard-stem. The model adjective новий (new) shows all the standard endings. Learn this table and you can decline the majority of Ukrainian adjectives.
| Case | Masculine | Feminine | Neuter | Plural |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nominative | новий | нова | нове | нові |
| Genitive | нового | нової | нового | нових |
| Dative | новому | новій | новому | новим |
| Accusative | нового (anim) / новий (inanim) | нову | нове | нових (anim) / нові (inanim) |
| Instrumental | новим | новою | новим | новими |
| Locative | новому / новім | новій | новому / новім | нових |
| Vocative | новий | нова | нове | нові |
Soft-Stem Adjective Endings
Soft-stem adjectives have a soft sign (ь) in their stem. The model adjective синій (blue) shows the soft-stem pattern. These are less common but include important adjectives like верхній (upper), нижній (lower), літній (summer), зимній (winter), ранній (early), пізній (late).
| Case | Masculine | Feminine | Neuter | Plural |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nominative | синій | синя | синє | сині |
| Genitive | синього | синьої | синього | синіх |
| Dative | синьому | синій | синьому | синім |
| Accusative | синього (anim) / синій (inanim) | синю | синє | синіх (anim) / сині (inanim) |
| Instrumental | синім | синьою | синім | синіми |
| Locative | синьому / синім | синій | синьому / синім | синіх |
| Vocative | синій | синя | синє | сині |
Short-Form & Predicative Adjectives
Unlike Russian, Ukrainian rarely uses short-form adjectives. In modern Ukrainian, you typically use the full form even in predicative position (after the verb "to be"). A few common exceptions exist — mostly fixed expressions or adjectives expressing readiness, ability, or state.
| Full Form | Short/Predicative | Example |
|---|---|---|
| готовий | готовий / готова / готове | Він готовий. (He is ready.) |
| повинний | повинен / повинна / повинне | Вона повинна йти. (She must go.) |
| потрібний | потрібен / потрібна / потрібне | Мені потрібна допомога. (I need help.) |
| певний | певен / певна / певне | Я певен. (I am sure.) |
