Numbers 1–20

Ukrainian cardinal numbers from 1 to 20 are the foundation of counting. Note that 1 and 2 have gender forms: один/одна/одне for masculine/feminine/neuter, and два/дві for masculine-neuter/feminine.

20двадцятьDVAHD-tsyat'
Tip: Numbers 11–19 all end in -надцять (literally "on ten"), similar to English "-teen." The pattern is very regular once you know 1–9.

Tens, Hundreds, Thousands

Beyond 20, Ukrainian numbers follow predictable patterns — with two notable exceptions: 40 (сорок) and 90 (дев'яносто) are irregular and must be memorized separately.

40сорокIrregular — does not follow the -десят pattern
50п'ятдесят

200двістіLiterally "two hundreds"

Двадцять п'ять = 25. Сто сорок три = 143. Тисяча дев'ятсот дев'яносто один = 1991.Compound numbers are formed by saying each part: hundreds + tens + ones.
Tip: The numbers 40 (сорок) and 90 (дев'яносто) are famous exceptions. Most tens end in -десят (from десять = ten), but these two are completely irregular. Just memorize them.

Numbers and Case Agreement

One of the trickiest aspects of Ukrainian numbers is that the noun following a number changes its form (case) depending on the number. This is a critical rule that affects every sentence containing a number:

NumberCase RequiredExampleTranslation
1Nominative singularодин студентone student
2Nominative pluralдва студентиtwo students
3Nominative pluralтри студентиthree students
4Nominative pluralчотири студентиfour students
5Genitive pluralп'ять студентівfive students
10Genitive pluralдесять студентівten students
21Nominative singularдвадцять один студентtwenty-one students
25Genitive pluralдвадцять п'ять студентівtwenty-five students
У мене три книги, але п'ять зошитів.I have three books but five notebooks.
Tip: The rule applies to the last digit: 21, 31, 101 all take Nominative singular (like 1); 22–24 take Nominative plural (like 2–4); 25–30 take Genitive plural (like 5+). Exception: 11–19 always take Genitive plural.

Ordinal Numbers

Ordinal numbers (first, second, third...) in Ukrainian function like adjectives — they agree in gender, number, and case with the noun they describe. Here are the ordinals from 1st to 10th in their masculine Nominative form:

NumberOrdinal (masc.)Ordinal (fem.)Ordinal (neut.)English
1stпершийпершапершеfirst
2ndдругийдругадругеsecond
3rdтретійтретятретєthird
4thчетвертийчетвертачетвертеfourth
5thп'ятийп'ятап'ятеfifth
6thшостийшосташостеsixth
7thсьомийсьомасьомеseventh
8thвосьмийвосьмавосьмеeighth
9thдев'ятийдев'ятадев'ятеninth
10thдесятийдесятадесятеtenth
Це мій перший урок. / Вона на другому поверсі.This is my first lesson. / She is on the second floor.
Tip: Ordinal numbers decline like adjectives. Третій (third) has a soft stem and follows a slightly different pattern than the others. In compound ordinals like 21st, only the last word becomes ordinal: двадцять перший.
