Nominative (Subject) Pronouns

Ukrainian has eight personal pronouns. They work like English "I, you, he, she, it, we, you, they" — but Ukrainian distinguishes informal singular "you" (ти) from formal/plural "you" (ви). Like German "Sie," using ви with one person shows respect.

Tip: When addressing one person formally (a teacher, stranger, elder), use ви with a singular verb: "Ви знаєте" (You know). In written letters, capitalize it as Ви to show extra respect.

Full Declension Table

Every pronoun changes form depending on its grammatical role. This is the complete table of all 8 pronouns across all 7 Ukrainian cases. The Vocative is the same as the Nominative for all pronouns.

Tip: Notice that Genitive and Accusative are identical for all pronouns. This is always the case in Ukrainian — pronouns never distinguish these two cases.

The Prepositional Н- Rule

When a third-person pronoun (він, вона, воно, вони) comes after a preposition, its form gains an н- prefix. This is mandatory in standard Ukrainian and applies to Genitive, Dative, Accusative, Instrumental, and Locative forms.

його (Gen/Acc)ньогодля нього (for him)

Я бачив його. → Я дивився на нього.I saw him. → I was looking at him.
Tip: The н- rule only applies to third-person pronouns (він/вона/воно/вони). First and second person (я, ти, ми, ви) never add н-.

Common Patterns

Here are everyday sentences showing pronouns in different cases. Pay attention to which case each preposition or verb requires.
