💭 Conditional Mood (би)

Expressing hypothetical situations, wishes, and polite requests in Ukrainian

How Ukrainian Conditionals Work

Ukrainian forms the conditional mood by combining the past tense of a verb with the particle би (or б after vowels). This is similar to Russian бы. Because the conditional is built on the past tense, the verb shows gender agreement: masculine -в, feminine -ла, neuter -ло, plural -ли. The particle б is a shortened form of би, used after words ending in a vowel for smoother speech. Both are equally correct.

Tip: If you know the past tense, you already know 90% of the conditional — just add би or б.

Forming the Conditional

The conditional is straightforward: take the past tense form and add би (or б after a vowel). The particle can float in the sentence but most commonly appears right after the verb.

FormExampleTranslation
MasculineЯ читав биI would read (male speaker)
FeminineЯ читала бI would read (female speaker)
PluralМи читали бWe would read
Tip: Note how б (not би) is used after читала and читали because those words end in a vowel.

Conditional Sentences (якби)

To express "if ... then ..." hypothetical sentences, use якби (if) + past tense in the condition clause, and past tense + би/б in the result clause. This is the equivalent of Russian если бы. Important: якщо means "if" for real, possible conditions. якби (якщо + би) means "if" for unreal, hypothetical conditions.

UkrainianEnglish
Якби я знав, я б прийшов.If I had known, I would have come.
Якби в мене був час, я б поїхав.If I had time, I would go.
Якби вона подзвонила, я б відповів.If she had called, I would have answered.
Якби ми мали гроші, ми б поїхали.If we had money, we would go.
Якби він вчив, він би склав іспит.If he had studied, he would have passed the exam.
Tip: якщо = "if" (real): Якщо буде дощ, я візьму парасольку. (If it rains, I will take an umbrella.) якби = "if" (unreal): Якби я був птахом, я б полетів. (If I were a bird, I would fly.)

Wishes & Polite Requests

The conditional mood is essential for polite speech in Ukrainian. Using би/б softens requests and makes them sound courteous rather than demanding.

PatternExampleTranslation
Wanting (polite)Я хотів би...I would like...
Polite questionЧи не могли б ви...?Could you...?
It would be goodБуло б добре...It would be good...
SuggestionМожна було б...One could... / It would be possible...
WishЯ б хотіла поїхати.I would like to go. (female)
Polite offerЧи не бажали б ви чаю?Would you like some tea?
Tip: Я хотів би (I would like) is much more polite than Я хочу (I want). Use the conditional form in restaurants, shops, and with people you don't know well.

щоб — Purpose & Desire Clauses

The conjunction щоб is used in two main ways: 1. хотіти + щоб + past tense = wanting someone else to do something (the subjects are different). 2. щоб + infinitive = "in order to" (purpose clause, same subject).

UkrainianEnglishNote
Я хочу, щоб ти прийшов.I want you to come.Different subjects (я / ти)
Я вчуся, щоб знати.I study in order to know.Same subject, purpose
Вона хоче, щоб ми поїхали.She wants us to go.Different subjects (вона / ми)
Я прийшов, щоб допомогти.I came in order to help.Same subject, purpose
Tip: After щоб, verbs take the past tense form when the subjects differ: Я хочу, щоб він прийшов (I want him to come — прийшов is past tense form, not actually past meaning).
