Seven Cases

Ukrainian has seven grammatical cases — one more than Russian. The extra case is the Vocative (кличний), used when directly addressing someone. Each case answers a specific question and changes the noun's ending.

CaseQuestionFunction
Nominative (називний)Хто? Що?Subject
Genitive (родовий)Кого? Чого?Possession, absence, "of"
Dative (давальний)Кому? Чому?Indirect object, "to"
Accusative (знахідний)Кого? Що?Direct object
Instrumental (орудний)Ким? Чим?Means, accompaniment, "with"
Locative (місцевий)На кому? На чому?Location (always with preposition)
Vocative (кличний)Direct address
Tip: If you know Russian cases, Ukrainian will feel familiar. The Locative is similar to Russian Prepositional, and the Vocative is the new one to learn.

Masculine Nouns

For masculine nouns ending in a consonant (like кіт — cat, стіл — table):

Caseкіт (cat)стіл (table)
Nominativeкітстіл
Genitiveкотастола
Dativeкоту / котовістолу / столові
Accusativeкота (animate)стіл (inanimate)
Instrumentalкотомстолом
Locativeна котіна столі
Vocativeкоте!столе!
Tip: Ukrainian Dative often has two forms (-у and -ові for masculine). Both are correct — -ові is sometimes preferred for animate nouns.

Feminine Nouns

For feminine nouns ending in -а (like книга — book, мама — mom):

Caseкнига (book)мама (mom)
Nominativeкнигамама
Genitiveкнигимами
Dativeкнизімамі
Accusativeкнигумаму
Instrumentalкнигоюмамою
Locativeу книзіна мамі
Vocativeкниго!мамо!

The Vocative Case

The Vocative is unique to Ukrainian (among major Slavic languages still using it actively). Use it when calling someone by name or addressing them directly.

NominativeVocativeUsage
ОксанаОксано!Оксано, йди сюди! (Oksana, come here!)
ІванІване!Іване, допоможи! (Ivan, help!)
мамамамо!Мамо, дивись! (Mom, look!)
другдруже!Друже, як справи? (Friend, how are you?)
УкраїнаУкраїно!Used in patriotic speech and poetry
Tip: The Vocative is alive and well in everyday Ukrainian. Skipping it sounds unnatural. Always use it when addressing people directly.

Key Prepositions

Like Russian, Ukrainian prepositions govern specific cases. Some prepositions change meaning depending on the case.
