Two ways to talk about the future: imperfective and perfective

Two Ways to Express Future

Ukrainian has two ways to express future actions, and the choice depends on verb aspect. The imperfective future uses буду + infinitive and describes ongoing, repeated, or habitual actions in the future (similar to "will be doing"). The perfective future conjugates the perfective verb directly and describes single, completed actions in the future (similar to "will do / will have done"). Understanding this distinction is essential — it's one of the most important concepts in Ukrainian grammar.

Я буду читати книгу. (I will be reading a book.) / Я прочитаю книгу. (I will finish reading the book.)Imperfective = process, ongoing. Perfective = completed result.
Tip: If you're unsure which to use, ask yourself: am I talking about the process or the result? Process → imperfective. Result → perfective.

Imperfective Future

The imperfective future is formed with the auxiliary verb буду (conjugated for person and number) followed by the infinitive of an imperfective verb. This is the easier form to learn because you only need to memorize the conjugation of буду — the main verb stays in the infinitive.

Personбуду + infinitiveExampleEnglish
ябудуЯ буду читати.I will be reading.
тибудешТи будеш читати.You will be reading.
він / вона / вонобудеВона буде читати.She will be reading.
мибудемоМи будемо працювати.We will be working.
вибудетеВи будете працювати.You will be working.
вонибудутьВони будуть працювати.They will be working.
Завтра я буду вчити нові слова.Tomorrow I will be studying new words.
Tip: The imperfective future is very similar in structure to English "will be doing." Use it when the action is ongoing, repeated, or when you're not emphasizing completion.

Perfective Future

The perfective future is formed by conjugating the perfective verb directly — no auxiliary needed. The perfective verb typically has a prefix (like про-, на-, з-) that signals completion. Here are two common perfective verbs fully conjugated in the future tense:

Personпрочитати (to finish reading)написати (to write / finish writing)
япрочитаюнапишу
типрочитаєшнапишеш
він / вона / вонопрочитаєнапише
мипрочитаємонапишемо
випрочитаєтенапишете
вонипрочитаютьнапишуть
Я напишу листа сьогодні ввечері.I will write (and finish) the letter this evening.
Tip: Perfective verbs in the present-tense conjugation always have future meaning. This is a key rule: a perfective verb cannot express present tense — its "present" forms automatically mean future.

Choosing Between Them

The choice between imperfective and perfective future depends on whether you're focusing on the process or the result. Here are side-by-side comparisons to illustrate the difference:

Imperfective FutureMeaningPerfective FutureMeaning
Я буду читати книгу.I'll be reading a book. (process)Я прочитаю книгу.I'll finish the book. (completion)
Він буде писати листа.He'll be writing a letter. (ongoing)Він напише листа.He'll write the letter. (will complete it)
Ми будемо вчити слова.We'll be studying words. (repeated)Ми вивчимо слова.We'll learn the words. (master them)
Вона буде готувати вечерю.She'll be cooking dinner. (in progress)Вона приготує вечерю.She'll cook dinner. (it'll be ready)
Tip: A useful test: if you can add "will finish" or "will complete" to the English translation and it still makes sense, use the perfective future. If the focus is on the activity itself, use the imperfective.
