🔄 Russian Verb Aspects: Perfective & Imperfective
The fundamental distinction that shapes how Russian expresses actions
What Are Aspects?
In Russian, almost every verb comes in a pair: imperfective (несовершенный вид) and perfective (совершенный вид). The imperfective describes ongoing, repeated, or incomplete actions. The perfective describes completed, one-time actions with a clear result. English doesn't have this distinction, which makes it one of the trickiest concepts for learners.
When to Use Imperfective
Use imperfective for: ongoing actions (process), repeated/habitual actions, general statements, and when the focus is on the activity itself rather than its completion.
| Use | Example | Translation |
|---|---|---|
| Ongoing process | Я писал письмо. | I was writing a letter. |
| Repeated action | Я каждый день читал. | I read every day. |
| General ability | Он хорошо готовит. | He cooks well. |
| Negated action | Я не открывал окно. | I didn't open the window. (didn't even try) |
When to Use Perfective
Use perfective for: completed one-time actions, actions with a definite result, sequential actions in narration, and future actions you intend to complete.
| Use | Example | Translation |
|---|---|---|
| Completed action | Я написал письмо. | I wrote (finished) the letter. |
| Sequence | Я встал, оделся и вышел. | I got up, got dressed, and went out. |
| Result | Он приготовил ужин. | He made (completed) dinner. |
| Single future | Я прочитаю эту книгу. | I will read (finish) this book. |
How Aspect Pairs Are Formed
Most aspect pairs are formed by adding a prefix to the imperfective verb to make it perfective. Some pairs use different stems entirely.
| Imperfective | Perfective | Method | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| читать | прочитать | prefix про- | to read |
| писать | написать | prefix на- | to write |
| делать | сделать | prefix с- | to do/make |
| готовить | приготовить | prefix при- | to cook/prepare |
| говорить | сказать | different stem | to say/speak |
| брать | взять | different stem | to take |
Aspect in Different Tenses
Imperfective verbs can be used in past, present, and future tenses. Perfective verbs only have past and future — because if an action is completed, it can't be happening right now.
| Tense | Imperfective | Perfective |
|---|---|---|
| Past | читал (was reading) | прочитал (finished reading) |
| Present | читаю (am reading) | — (not possible) |
| Future | буду читать (will be reading) | прочитаю (will finish reading) |
