🔄 Russian Verb Aspects: Perfective & Imperfective

The fundamental distinction that shapes how Russian expresses actions

What Are Aspects?

In Russian, almost every verb comes in a pair: imperfective (несовершенный вид) and perfective (совершенный вид). The imperfective describes ongoing, repeated, or incomplete actions. The perfective describes completed, one-time actions with a clear result. English doesn't have this distinction, which makes it one of the trickiest concepts for learners.

Я читал книгу. (imperfective — I was reading a book) / Я прочитал книгу. (perfective — I read/finished the book)Same action, but the imperfective focuses on the process, and the perfective focuses on the completed result.

When to Use Imperfective

Use imperfective for: ongoing actions (process), repeated/habitual actions, general statements, and when the focus is on the activity itself rather than its completion.

UseExampleTranslation
Ongoing processЯ писал письмо.I was writing a letter.
Repeated actionЯ каждый день читал.I read every day.
General abilityОн хорошо готовит.He cooks well.
Negated actionЯ не открывал окно.I didn't open the window. (didn't even try)

When to Use Perfective

Use perfective for: completed one-time actions, actions with a definite result, sequential actions in narration, and future actions you intend to complete.

UseExampleTranslation
Completed actionЯ написал письмо.I wrote (finished) the letter.
SequenceЯ встал, оделся и вышел.I got up, got dressed, and went out.
ResultОн приготовил ужин.He made (completed) dinner.
Single futureЯ прочитаю эту книгу.I will read (finish) this book.

How Aspect Pairs Are Formed

Most aspect pairs are formed by adding a prefix to the imperfective verb to make it perfective. Some pairs use different stems entirely.

ImperfectivePerfectiveMethodMeaning
читатьпрочитатьprefix про-to read
писатьнаписатьprefix на-to write
делатьсделатьprefix с-to do/make
готовитьприготовитьprefix при-to cook/prepare
говоритьсказатьdifferent stemto say/speak
братьвзятьdifferent stemto take
Tip: Be careful — some prefixes change the meaning of the verb entirely, not just the aspect. "Писать" (to write) → "написать" (to write/finish) vs. "переписать" (to rewrite). Only certain prefix+verb combinations form true aspect pairs.

Aspect in Different Tenses

Imperfective verbs can be used in past, present, and future tenses. Perfective verbs only have past and future — because if an action is completed, it can't be happening right now.

TenseImperfectivePerfective
Pastчитал (was reading)прочитал (finished reading)
Presentчитаю (am reading)— (not possible)
Futureбуду читать (will be reading)прочитаю (will finish reading)
Tip: Imperfective future uses "буду + infinitive" (compound). Perfective future uses conjugated forms (simple). "Я буду читать" (I will be reading) vs. "Я прочитаю" (I will read it through).
