What Is Konjunktiv II?
The Konjunktiv II is used for situations that are not real — hypothetical scenarios, wishes, polite requests, and conditions contrary to fact. In English, this is similar to "would," "could," or constructions like "If I were rich..." German has two ways to form Konjunktiv II: • "würde" + infinitive — the modern, safe form that works with almost any verb • Direct Konjunktiv II forms — hätte, wäre, könnte, etc. — shorter and more elegant, required for common verbs In practice, Germans use the direct forms for haben, sein, and modal verbs, and "würde + infinitive" for most other verbs.
würde + Infinitive
The "würde" form is the go-to construction for most verbs. It works like English "would + verb." "würde" is conjugated; the main verb stays as an infinitive at the end of the sentence.

hätte, wäre, and Modal Verbs
For haben (to have), sein (to be), and the modal verbs, Germans strongly prefer the direct Konjunktiv II form over "würde." Saying "ich würde haben" or "ich würde sein" sounds awkward and unnatural.

Conditional Sentences (wenn-Sätze)
Conditional sentences in Konjunktiv II follow the pattern: "wenn + Konjunktiv II, ... Konjunktiv II." The "wenn" clause states the hypothetical condition, and the main clause states the hypothetical result.

Polite Requests & Wishes
Konjunktiv II is the key to polite German. Using it softens requests and makes them sound courteous rather than demanding. It is also used to express wishes.
