The Core Difference

Both "por" and "para" often translate as "for" in English, but they are not interchangeable. Para points forward — toward a purpose, destination, deadline, or recipient. Por points backward or around — toward a cause, exchange, duration, path, or means. A simple way to start: Para answers "what for?" (purpose/goal). Por answers "why?" (cause/reason) or "how?" (means/exchange).

When to Use Para

Para is used when you are pointing toward a goal, destination, recipient, or deadline. Think of para as an arrow aiming at something ahead.

UseExampleEnglish

DeadlineEs para mañana.It's for tomorrow.
RecipientEl regalo es para ti.The gift is for you.

Quick Decision Guide

When you see "for" in an English sentence, try these substitutions to decide: • Can you replace "for" with "in order to"? → para. ("I study for learning" = "I study in order to learn" → Estudio para aprender.) • Can you replace "for" with "because of"? → por. ("Thanks for your help" = "Thanks because of your help" → Gracias por tu ayuda.) • Can you replace "for" with "in exchange for"? → por. ("I paid $10 for the book" = "I paid $10 in exchange for the book" → Pagué $10 por el libro.) • Can you replace "for" with "intended for (someone)"? → para. ("The gift is for you" = "The gift is intended for you" → El regalo es para ti.)

Tip: Some common fixed expressions to memorize: por favor (please), por ejemplo (for example), por supuesto (of course), por eso (that's why), por fin (finally), para siempre (forever), para nada (not at all). These don't follow the rules — they're simply set phrases.
