⚖️ Por vs Para
Two words for "for" — learn when to use each one
The Core Difference
Both "por" and "para" often translate as "for" in English, but they are not interchangeable. Para points forward — toward a purpose, destination, deadline, or recipient. Por points backward or around — toward a cause, exchange, duration, path, or means. A simple way to start: Para answers "what for?" (purpose/goal). Por answers "why?" (cause/reason) or "how?" (means/exchange).
When to Use Para
Para is used when you are pointing toward a goal, destination, recipient, or deadline. Think of para as an arrow aiming at something ahead.
| Use | Example | English |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Estudio para aprender. | I study to learn. |
| Destination | Salgo para Madrid. | I leave for Madrid. |
| Deadline | Es para mañana. | It's for tomorrow. |
| Recipient | El regalo es para ti. | The gift is for you. |
| Opinion | Para mí, es fácil. | For me, it's easy. |
| Comparison | Para un niño, lee bien. | For a child, he reads well. |
When to Use Por
Por is used when you are pointing toward a cause, an exchange, a duration, a path, or a means of communication. Think of por as looking at the reason behind something or the way through something.
